Alabama Road Trip Part Two
Here is Part Two of my Alabama Road Trip with mom and her friend Savannah.
The day after all my hiking in the first part of the trip, mom decided to leave me at the house. They were heading to a state park over in north Georgia, about 50 minutes away and were hoping to stop at some antique places along the way. Mom said it would be way to hot for me to wait in the car. I didn't mind staying home, I slept all day.
Anyway, it is now our third and final day in Alabama and we're off hiking again. After a lot of discussion the night before over cocktails on the back deck it was decided we would all go back to DeSoto Falls State Park because it was close and there were more waterfalls we could see.
We hit the trails early in the day due to the chance of afternoon thunderstorms. These trails were not as well used as the others ones we had hiked.
It didn't take too long to reach Lodge Falls. Like the waterfalls in the previous post, these weren't running very strongly, low water levels I heard someone tell mom.
We all stopped to look at the rock formations, I found them interesting.
We eventually reached Indian Falls. This one was flowing the best out of all the waterfalls we hiked to.
From Indian Falls we crossed a road and headed down the Boardwalk Trail. Mom said a sign said "Boardwalk slippery when wet." What it didn't say was that if you were wearing hiking boots it was pretty slick also. Mom slid a few times. Savannah had on sneakers and did fine.
The trail went on a long ways, but it is real pretty with lots of birds singing in the trees.
We stopped for a quick rest and I let mom get this photo of me. She's proud of me for learning how to pose.
After we left DeSoto Falls State Park we drove over to Little River National Preserve. Mom stopped at an overlook and took this photo of the falls. She and Savannah commented on how this is the same water, the same river that runs behind the house we're staying at. Pretty cool!
A little further down we stopped again and you could really see how big the canyon is. Mom said she had no idea Alabama and Northwestern Georgia had such big canyons.
As we were heading back to the house mom read a sign that said "Divided Highway". She and Savannah were shocked to see this huge rock in the middle of the road. It was not at all what they were expecting.
After a day of hiking and exploring I was beat and took a nap while mom and Savannah watched movies.
When mom was getting ready to load the car, she called out to Savannah and then whispered "Deer!". I knew she didn't want me to get all excited so I continued to nap while they "oohed and aahed" at the 5 deer in the front of the house. I mean, why would I get excited, I don't even know what a deer is.
The next morning we finished loading mom's car and headed home. We stopped so mom could feed her car while Savannah went to get drinks and snacks for her and mom. Mom was laughing when she saw this. She tried to explain what a pay phone was but I just wanted to nap and dream about getting home.
Back on the road, I dozed off and dreamed of sleeping in mom's king size bed and not that small bed at the Alabama house.
It was a fun weekend and I really enjoyed hiking with mom and am looking forward to doing it again in October up in North Carolina. In the meantime, we're heading down to her daughter's house for July 4th weekend.
